Martyn Brabbins has been music director of the English National Opera since 2016. He has had a busy opera career from his early days at the Kirov Theatre to more recent engagements at La Scala and the Bayerische Staatsoper, as well as regular appearances in Lyon, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Antwerp. He makes guest appearances with top international orchestras such as the Concertgebouworkest, the San Francisco Symphony, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Known for his advocacy of British composers, he has conducted hundreds of world premières across the globe. His extensive discography includes prize-winning discs of operas by Korngold, Birtwistle and Harvey. Brabbins was associate principal conductor of the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (1994–2005), principal guest conductor of the Royal Flemish Philharmonic (2009–15), chief conductor of the Nagoya Philharmonic (2012–16), and artistic director of the Cheltenham International Festival of Music (2005–07). He has for many years supported professional, student and amateur music-making at the highest level in the UK.
