Alan Gilbert

Alan Gilbert became music director of the New York Philharmonic in 2009. The first native New Yorker to hold the post, he ushered in what the New York Times has called ‘an adventurous new era’ at the orchestra. He is conductor laureate of the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra and principal guest conductor of Hamburg’s NDR Symphony Orchestra, and regularly conducts leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, the Philadelphia Orchestra, Cleveland Orchestra, Chicago Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra. As an opera conductor he has appeared with the Santa Fe Opera (where he was music director for three seasons), Los Angeles Opera and Zürich Opera, and he made his acclaimed Metropolitan Opera début in 2008 conducting John Adams’s Doctor Atomic. Gilbert studied at Harvard University, the Curtis Institute of Music and the Juilliard School.
