Paul Mägi



Estonian conductor Paul Mägi has had a long and successful career as conductor and artistic leader of several prominent ensembles in the Baltic states, including the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra, the Estonian Radio Chamber Orchestra and the Estonian National Opera.

Paul Mägi has been artistic director and chief conductor of the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra since 2004; in 2017 he was appointed its honorary conductor. Since 2011 he has been artistic director and chief conductor of the Vanemuine Theatre in Tartu, Estonia. He has given concerts all over Europe and the USA, appearing with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra, Ecuador National Symphony Orchestra and major orchestras in Sweden. He has conducted international opera productions all over the world, for instance at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, Finnish National Opera, Wexford Festival in Ireland and Swedish Royal Opera.

Paul Mägi is professor of orchestra conducting at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre and guest professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm. Since 2013 he has been a member of the Royal Swedish Music Academy. He is also a renowned jazz violinist.
