Nathalie Stutzmann

As the music director of the Atlanta Symphony from the 2022/23 season, Nathalie Stutzmann has become only the second woman in history to lead a major American orchestra. She is also the principal guest conductor of the Philadelphia Orchestra and chief conductor of the Kristiansand Symphony Orchestra.

Nathalie Stutzmann is considered one of the most outstanding musical personalities of our time. Charismatic musicianship, combined with unique rigour, energy and fantasy characterise her style. A rich variety of strands form the core of her repertoire, with a strong focus on Central European and Russian romanticism. This ranges from Beethoven, Schumann, Brahms and Dvořák through to Tchaikovsky, Mahler, Bruckner and Strauss — as well as French 19th-century repertoire and impressionism. Having also established a strong reputation as an opera conductor, she has led large scale works by composers such as Wagner, Boito, Tchaikovsky and Mozart.

Nathalie Stutzmann started her studies at a very young age in piano, bassoon and cello, going on to study conducting with Jorma Panula. She was mentored by Seiji Ozawa and Sir Simon Rattle. Also one of today’s most esteemed contraltos, she has made more than 80 recordings, receiving prestigious awards. In 2019 she was named Chevalier de la Légion d’honneur, France’s highest honour, and in 2020 she received the distinction Commandeur de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres.
