This album presents a selection of piano works by Finnish composer Einar Englund, spanning nearly 50 years of his career. Englund, often described as the most "urbane" of Finnish composers, blends neoclassical clarity with modernist influences, drawing inspiration from Finnish folk traditions, Russian composers like Shostakovich and Prokofiev, and even jazz from his studies in the United States.
The collection includes Humoresques (1936), a youthful work that already hints at Englund’s rhythmic vitality, and Pavane (1983), written in memory of his 17-year-old cat Bianca. These pieces showcase his characteristic wit, structural precision, and deep sense of musical craftsmanship. Despite evolving stylistically, Englund never abandoned tonality, always prioritizing spontaneity and expressive clarity.
