This album showcases the work of four Hungarian composers who each played a significant role in shaping a new national musical style in the early 20th century. Their compositions not only gained international acclaim but also elevated Hungary's music standards. The album features early works by Leó Weiner and Ernő Dohnányi, whose string trios have become key pieces in this instrumental genre, blending elegance with hints of local folklore. Zoltán Kodály, a seminal figure alongside Béla Bartók, contributed his Intermezzo, which reflects the folk influences from his ethnomusicological studies. The album also includes a piece by the lesser-known László Weiner, whose promising career was tragically cut short. His Serenade, less infused with Hungarian elements, echoes the modernist vibe of Vienna.
