Since it was founded in 1979, Musica Vitae has developed into one of Sweden’s foremost string ensembles. Swedish and international soloists and conductors are often invited to perform but, in the true spirit of chamber music, the ensemble often plays under its artistic director Benjamin Schmid or leader Dorota Siuda. The classical chamber music repertoire forms the basis of Musica Vitae’s programmes, but the ensemble also ventures into contemporary music, jazz, children’s songs and pop music. It has given the premières of some 250 works, not only by well-established composers but also by students at Swedish music colleges. This wide-ranging repertoire is performed at venues large and small in Sweden, continental Europe and the rest of the world. Whether it is playing at its home base, Nygatan 6 in Växjö, or in concert halls, churches or converted cinemas, Musica Vitae always focuses on the interaction between audience and ensemble that is characteristic of chamber music, an exchange that is invigorating for all involved.
