Norrköping Symphony Orchestra

The Norrköping Symphony Orchestra (SON) was founded in 1912 and comprises 85 players. In recent years the orchestra has won great acclaim both in Sweden and internationally for its concerts, recordings and tours. Many of the world’s foremost conductors have appeared with the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, among them Herbert Blomstedt, Okko Kamu and Franz Welser-Möst. Over the years many new works have been premièred in Norrköping and, through a donation by the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, the orchestra was able to arrange a contest in support of young composers (2012–14). Since 1994 the Norrköping Symphony Orchestra has been based at one of Sweden’s most beautiful concert halls, the Louis De Geer Concert Hall, situated in the city’s unique historic industrial district. The orchestra gives regular concerts in Stockholm and has also made tours to Europe, Japan and China. In 2018, the SON and Christian Lindberg gave a warmly received performance of Allan Pettersson’s Symphony No. 7 in Vienna. Among the orchestra’s many BIS recordings are critically acclaimed discs of Ingvar Lidholm’s orchestral music. 2018 saw the release of the House of Cards Symphony with music from the well-known TV series. In the orchestra’s internationally acclaimed series of Allan Pettersson’s symphonies, the recording of No. 9 was awarded a Swedish Grammis award, whilst the discs with Nos 13 and 14 were both Grammis-nominated. Other acclaimed recordings include Allan Pettersson’s Symphony No. 12, ‘The Dead in the Square’, with the Swedish Radio Choir and Eric Ericson’s Chamber Choir, and the violin concertos by Tchaikovsky and Barber with Johan Dalene as soloist, conducted by Daniel Blendulf.
