Øystein Baadsvik



Øystein Baadsvik was born in Trondheim, Norway, and his international reputation was established in 1991 when he was awarded two prizes at the prestigious Concours International d’Exécution Musicale in Geneva, Switzerland. His virtuoso technique and extraordinary musicality have allowed him to carve out a career that has taken him around the globe. Baadsvik is sought after worldwide and has performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras such as the Oslo Philharmonic, Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Taiwan National Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria in Melbourne, Warsaw Philharmonic, Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Norrköping Symphony Orchestra and Singapore Symphony Orchestra.

Øystein Baadsvik has premièred more than fifty solo works and has expanded the repertoire with his own compositions. He is also dedicated to expanding the boundaries of his instrument, performing solo repertoire as well as chamber music and collaborating with jazz and rock musicians. New playing techniques developed by him have been used in a number of recent compositions.

Voted one of the top ten brass players in history by Classic FM listeners, Baadsvik is an active recording artist whose albums receive unstinting praise. His first recording on the BIS label, Tuba Carnival, was recommended by the website ClassicsToday.com as one of the best recordings with a solo instrument and orchestra worldwide, and the Daily Telegraph (UK) wrote: ‘Baadsvik shows that anything a violin can do, a tuba can do too.’ On a further nine releases to date, Baadsvik displays his virtuosity and musicianship in music by composers ranging from Pat Metheny and Astor Piazzolla to Vaughan Williams and Kalevi Aho. His discs have on two occasions earned him awards for Excellence in Recording by the International Tuba Euphonium Association. Øystein Baadsvik studied with the celebrated tuba player Harvey Phillips at Indiana University and with the legendary Arnold Jacobs of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.
