Miguel Baselga

Among pianists with a special focus on Spanish repertoire, Miguel Baselga is often regarded as one of the most interesting of his generation. Born in Luxembourg, he began playing the piano at the age of six. After graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Liège in Belgium, he continued his studies with the Spanish pianist Eduardo Del Pueyo.

Acclaimed recordings, which besides the ongoing cycle of Albéniz’s complete piano music include a disc of Manuel de Falla’s music for piano solo [BIS-773], have provided an impetus to Baselga’s career as a soloist. He has appeared with a number of orchestras, and as a recitalist, making his début at the prestigious 92nd Street Y in New York in 2001, a concert which earned him the following praise on the website Concertonet.com: ‘Miguel Baselga, like Vladimir Horowitz, is aware enough of his own prodigious talents to arrange such a fingerbreaker [Ravel’s La Valse] for his own dexterous showcase. I doubt that this arrangement will catch on with too many of his colleagues; it is simply beyond the reach of most…’ In June 2013, the French magazine Diapason included Baselga on its list of fifteen Spanish piano virtuosos, ‘15 grands d’Espagne’.
