Niek de Groot is one of today’s leading double bassists. Originally a trumpet player, he took up the double bass at the age of 18, and soon after became principal bass with several European ensembles, including the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra where he remained for ten years. After his formal studies he further developed his skills at the Banff Centre for the Arts, Canada. In 1996 he was appointed Senior Professor at the Folkwang University of Arts, Essen where he still teaches. Niek de Groot also dedicates himself to chamber music and solo performances, performing at prestigious venues and festivals and recording regularly.
