The British pianist Joseph Houston is active in the fields of contemporary and experimental music. He particularly enjoys projects which involve working closely with composers and other performers, including Catherine Lamb, Christian Wolff, Lore Lixenberg, Rebecca Saunders, Rolf Hind and Christian Mason. After studies at the University of York, Houston attended the Royal College of Music, London, where he was awarded an M.Mus. in Advanced Performance with distinction. Chosen as a Park Lane Group Young Artist in 2013, he gave his début solo recitals at the Purcell Room and Wigmore Hall. He has appeared as a soloist in repertoire ranging from Brahms’ First Piano Concerto to John Cage’s Concert for Piano and Orchestra and Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony. Based in Berlin, Joseph Houston has performed across Europe and in China at venues and festivals such as the Berlin Akademie der Künste, the BBC Proms, Lille Piano(s) Festival, Pharos Contemporary Music Festival (Cyprus), Donaueschinger Musiktage, and Summartónar Festival (Faroe Islands). His playing has been broadcast on the BBC, France Musique, and SWR2.
