Stefan Schulz

Stefan Schulz initially played the horn but subsequently took up the trombone. He studied in Berlin and Chicago and, before taking up his current position as a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, was the bass trombonist of the Staatskapelle Berlin from 1993 until 2002. From 1996 until 2002 he also played in the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra. Since the summer of 2004, he has taught at the Berlin University of the Arts. Stefan Schulz has performed as a soloist with renowned orchestras worldwide.

He is a dedicated chamber musician, in which capacity he is a permanent member of the Berlin Philharmonic Brass and a regular guest with the ensemble German Brass. Together with the trombonists Joseph Alessi, Michel Becquet and Jorgen van Rijen, he founded the World Trombone Quartet. A special artistic friendship links him with the composer and saxophonist Daniel Schnyder; Stefan Schulz has premièred and recorded many of Schnyder’s works. Together with Schnyder and the pianist Marcin Grochowina, he plays in the Daniel Schnyder Trio. Stefan Schulz plays exclusively on instruments built by Antoine Courtois.
