Rick Stotijn is a tireless advocate of his instrument and its endless possibilities, and has collaborated with composers such as Louis Andriessen, Michel van der Aa, Martijn Padding, Jesper Nordin and Britta Byström. A varied discography includes works by composers ranging from Bottesini to Piazzolla, and on BIS he appears on recordings with two innovative ensembles of which he is co-founder: the Stockholm Syndrome Ensemble and ORBI. Rick Stotijn studied the double bass at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, continuing his studies at the Freiburg Hochschule für Musik. He has won several competitions and is the recipient of the prestigious Dutch Music Prize.
As a soloist he performs with orchestras such as the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, Residentie Orkest The Hague, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra and Scottish Ensemble. He is currently principal bass player in the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Mahler Chamber Orchestra, having held the same position with the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and Amsterdam Sinfonietta. Rick Stotijn is a regular guest at festivals such as the Delft Chamber Music Festival, the International Chamber Music Festival in Utrecht and the Lucerne Festival, where he is also principal bass in the festival orchestra. He is professor of double bass at the Robert Schumann Hochschule Düsseldorf.
