Kathryn Stott

One of Britain’s most versatile musicians, Kathryn Stott studied at the Yehudi Menuhin School and the Royal College of Music, and was a prize-winner at the Leeds International Piano Competition in 1978. Since then she has appeared regularly with major orchestras throughout the world, but she is also dedicated to chamber music and enjoys long-standing musical relationships with distinguished instrumentalists, including a noted collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma. A special interest in contemporary music has led to many world premières and a particularly close collaboration with composer Graham Fitkin.

Kathryn Stott has an acclaimed and wide-ranging discography, including solo recitals of music by John Foulds and Erwin Schulhoff for BIS. On Solitaires, described as ‘a disc of indisputable intelligence and sonic opulence’ in the French magazine Diapason, she gives proof of her enduring passion for French music, and for BIS she has also recorded several projects with the cellist Christian Poltéra and with her piano duo partner Noriko Ogawa. Passionate about working with young musicians, Kathryn Stott presently teaches at the Norwegian Academy of Music and is International Chair of Piano at Royal Northern College of Music.

Since 1995 Kathryn Stott has been curating and directing festivals, constantly exploring music she ‘knows nothing about’ and bringing together unusual musical combinations. She is currently artistic director of the Australian Festival of Chamber Music.
