Lakshminarayana Subramaniam

Dr L. Subramaniam is the founder-director of the Lakshminarayana Global Music Festival, in which the spirit of encounter, which he has always enjoyed, is strongly expressed. The Festival has brought some of the greatest artists from around the globe together on one stage. It is held annually, primarily in India, but has also been held in different parts of the world. Established among the foremost Indian composers in the realm of orchestral composition, in 1983 L. Subramaniam crossed the frontier into the Western classical tradition. Since then he has written and created works for orchestras and institutions such as the New York Philharmonic (Fantasy on Vedic Chants), Orchestre de la Suisse Romande (Turbulence), Kirov Ballet (Shanti Priya) and Oslo Philharmonic (Concerto for Two Violins). A recent orchestral composition entitled Astral Symphony, is scored for full symphony orchestra and soloists from different musical traditions, once again emphasizing the concept of Global Fusion.

Dr L. Subramaniam has received several awards and honours, including the coveted Padma Bhushan and Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for ‘Most Creative Artist’ from the President of India. In recognition of his contribution to the musical world, he has been awarded honorary doctorates by Bangalore University, the University of Madras and Sheffield University.
