The Swedish pianist Fredrik Ullén has performed as a soloist in contemporary and classical/romantic literature at a large number of international music festivals, to outstanding critical acclaim. Ullén’s extensive repertoire includes many of the most complex and demanding works in the piano literature, such as Ligeti’s complete piano études, Reger’s Spezialstudien and music by Sorabji, Xenakis, Flynn and Ferneyhough. He has a particular interest in creative programming with couplings of new and traditional literature.
His recordings for BIS Records have been enthusiastically praised by internationally renowned critics and have received an impressive number of prestigious awards and accolades, including Diapason d’or, CHOC (Le Monde de la Musique), Stern des Monats (Fono Forum), Recommandé (Répertoire) and Recomendado (CD Compact).
Fredrik Ullén performs regularly in various chamber music constellations and enjoys collaborations with other art forms as well as interdisciplinary events bridging arts and science. As a teacher, he has given seminars and masterclasses at several musical academies and colleges in Europe and the United States. Ullén is a Scientific Member of the Max Planck Society (2021), and a fellow of Academia Europaea (2017) and the Royal Swedish Academy of Music (2007). Since 2021 he is Director at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics in Frankfurt. He is also a Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at Karolinska Institutet. His scientific research is focused on musical expertise and creativity.
