Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (RSPO) was founded in 1902 and has made its home in Konserthuset Stockholm, the blue concert hall building in the city centre, since 1926. The orchestra endeavours to reinvigorate and expand the traditional symphonic repertoire, organising an annual, internationally renowned composer festival and regularly commissioning and premièring new works. It has also been noted for its pioneering efforts towards a more gender-balanced repertoire. The RSPO participates annually in the Nobel Prize Award Ceremony. Sakari Oramo was the orchestra’s chief conductor over a fruitful and very successful period of 13 years, from 2008 until 2021. His predecessor Alan Gilbert led the orchestra from 2000 until 2008. Both Oramo and Gilbert are now conductors laureate of the RSPO, continuing with regular collaborations. Furthermore, Franz Welser-Möst holds the title Eric Ericson Honorary Chair, a position that involves making annual guest appearances with the RSPO. Through successful tours and award-winning recordings the orchestra has confirmed its international standing, to the point of being called ‘one of the finest orchestras in the world’ (Die Welt). KonserthusetPlay.se is the orchestra’s online concert hall, offering a large selection of filmed performances available for free streaming worldwide. www.konserthuset.se/en/royal-stockholm-philharmonic-orchestra
